DACT commences operations

Damietta Alliance Container Terminal

Egypt, March 2026: With the first visit of Hapag-Lloyd's “Essen Express”, the Damietta Alliance Container Terminal (DACT) officially commenced commercial operations earlier this year. Inros Lackner is responsible for the overall planning and site supervision – from the onshore terminal infrastructure and operational buildings to the transport routes and high-performance energy supply.

The terminal in the Egyptian Mediterranean port of Damietta has an annual handling capacity of approximately 3.3 million TEU and is positioned as a central hub for international maritime transport. Around 80% of the throughput is transshipment traffic, with another 20% consisting of import and export cargo for the Egyptian market and adjacent regions such as the Levant and the Black Sea area.

The operator is Damietta Alliance Container Terminal S.A.E., a joint venture of leading logistics companies that includes Hapag-Lloyd, EUROGATE and Contship Italia Group as well as regional partners. The approximately 93-hectare terminal features a 1,670m-long quay with a water depth of 18 metres. Operations are supported by 12 fully electric ship-to-shore cranes and 40 hybrid rubber-tyred gantry cranes. The infrastructure is complemented by modern handling and logistics systems and a rail connection with six tracks, two of which are already operational.

Thanks to its direct connections to global shipping routes and to regional markets by road and rail, the new terminal improves the resilience of international supply chains and opens up new economic opportunities. Particular emphasis is placed on occupational safety, environmental sustainability and energy efficiency. The use of electric and hybrid cargo-handling technology helps to reduce emissions and to enhance the sustainability of terminal operations.
